What Is Jacquard Fabric?

Jacquard is not one fabric — it is any fabric whose pattern is woven or knit into the structure itself, thread by thread, rather than printed on the surface. Flip a jacquard over and you will see the design's negative on the back; scratch it and nothing comes off, because the pattern is the cloth.

The name comes from Joseph Marie Jacquard, whose 1804 loom attachment used punched cards to control individual threads — a machine so influential that early computing borrowed its cards. Every brocade, damask and woven-logo ribbon since is his descendant.

How jacquard is made

A jacquard mechanism lifts warp threads individually instead of in fixed groups, so the weave can change at any point in the cloth — that freedom is what draws flowers, medallions or geometry directly in structure. Knit jacquards do the same with needle selection, building the motif into the knit, often with a second color carried behind.

The jacquard family

What jacquard feels like

More substantial than a print of the same fiber: the extra structural threads give body. Woven jacquards hold shapes — box-pleat a brocade skirt and it stays. Knit jacquards keep normal knit stretch with a slightly cushioned hand.

What to sew with jacquard

Mind the motif the way you would a plaid: center large medallions, match across obvious seams, and buy a little extra for placement. Woven jacquards can fray from their floats — finish seams cleanly.

Jacquard vs. print

A print sits ink-deep on one face and can fade, crack or wash down. A jacquard's pattern is the fabric — permanent, visible from both sides, with real texture. Prints win on photographic detail and cost; jacquards win on depth, body and longevity.

Common questions

Is jacquard stretchy?

Woven jacquards are stable. Knit jacquards stretch like the knits they are — the listing's construction and stretch rating settle it for any specific fabric.

What is the difference between brocade and jacquard?

Jacquard is the umbrella (pattern woven in); brocade is one member — the rich, raised, often metallic evening version. All brocade is jacquard; not all jacquard is brocade.

Can you wash jacquard?

Most polyester jacquards machine wash cool and gently. Metallic-thread brocades and anything silk-content prefer hand washing or dry cleaning. Fiber content on the listing is the deciding word.
