What Fabric for Leggings?
Leggings ask more of fabric than almost any garment: they stretch across the body's widest measurements, squat, sit and walk all day — and must return to shape every time. The fabric answer splits by how the leggings will live.
The three real options
- Nylon- or poly-spandex knit (athletic) — 20%+ spandex territory, 200–280 gsm, four-way stretch with hard recovery. This is what performance leggings are made of; nylon blends feel softer, poly blends dry faster. See the spandex guide for why recovery beats stretch.
- Cotton-spandex jersey (lounge) — soft, breathable, matte; 5–10% spandex. Lovely for lounging, honest weakness: cotton bags at the knees with hard wear and holds sweat.
- Ponte (polish) — the firm double knit that reads as pants. Ponte leggings pair with tunics and blazers; choose a rayon-nylon-spandex blend for recovery.
The squat test, and why weight matters
Opacity is the leggings failure everyone fears. Two numbers predict it: weight (230 gsm and up is the safe zone for solid-color leggings; under 200 risks sheer when stretched) and stretch discipline (a fabric stretched past its recovery range thins and shows). Test the honest way: stretch a single layer over your hand in daylight.
What to check on the listing
- Four-way stretch for athletic use; two-way minimum for lounge
- Weight 230+ gsm for opaque solids, lighter acceptable in prints (prints hide)
- Spandex share: 15%+ athletic, 5–10% lounge
- Recovery language — stretch percentage without recovery is half a spec
Sewing leggings
Stretch needle, stretch stitch (lightning or narrow zigzag) or serger, and a twin-needle hem. The one construction detail that separates homemade from great: a gusset — the diamond at the crotch seam that removes the four-seam stress point and adds range of motion.

Common questions
What fabric do quality athletic leggings use?
Nylon-spandex around 75/25, 220–280 gsm, four-way stretch — brushed versions give the buttery hand the big athletic brands are known for.
Why do my leggings go see-through when I squat?
The fabric is too light for its color, or stretched past its range. Solid colors under ~200 gsm are the usual culprit; dark prints forgive most.
Are cotton leggings good?
For lounge and layering, genuinely yes — soft and breathable. For workouts, no: cotton holds moisture and loses shape at the knees. Match the fiber to the life the leggings will lead.
