Rib Knit, Explained

Rib knit is fabric knitted in alternating vertical columns of face and reverse stitches — the corduroy-looking stretch fabric on every sweatshirt cuff and t-shirt neckband. Those columns concertina sideways, which is why rib stretches roughly twice as far as jersey and, crucially, snaps back: rib is the recovery champion of the knit world even with no spandex at all.

1x1, 2x2 and friends

The numbers describe the column pattern: 1x1 rib alternates single columns — fine, dense, the classic neckband; 2x2 rib pairs them — bolder texture, the sweater-cuff look. Wider ribs read chunkier and stretch slightly differently. Add spandex and recovery goes from good to relentless.

What rib feels like

Elastic, textured and body-following. Relaxed, rib looks narrow; it lives stretched. Unlike jersey it does not curl at cut edges, and its vertical lines flatter fitted silhouettes — the reason ribbed tanks, bodycon dresses and baby-tee revivals never really leave.

What to sew with rib

The band rule every sewist needs

Bands are cut SHORTER than the edge they finish — usually 75–85% of the opening length — then stretched to fit as you sew. That negative length is what makes a neckband hug instead of gape. Quarter-mark both band and opening, match the marks, stretch only the band, and sew with a stretch stitch. It is the single highest-value knit technique to learn.

Common questions

What is rib knit used for?

Anywhere an edge must stretch and recover: cuffs, collars, waistbands, plus whole fitted garments. Matching rib to a sweatshirt fabric is the classic pairing — french terry body, rib trims.

Does rib knit stretch out over time?

Good rib recovers by structure; spandex-blend rib recovers hardest. What defeats it is heat — hot dryers cook the snap out. Wash cool, dry low, and bands stay tight.

How much shorter should a neckband be?

Start at 80% of the neckline length for 1x1 rib and adjust by fabric: stretchier rib can go shorter, stable rib longer. Test on the actual fabric — one quick sample beats any formula.
