What Is Pointelle?
Pointelle is a fine knit patterned with tiny deliberate holes — eyelets knitted directly into the fabric by transferring stitches, so the openwork is structure, not damage or embroidery. The result reads instantly: delicate, airy, vintage-feminine, the fabric of heirloom baby sets, camisoles and the prettier end of the layering drawer.
How pointelle is made
Knitting machines shift selected stitches sideways before working the next row, opening precise little eyelets — usually arranged in chevrons, diamonds or columns. Because the holes are formed loops, not cuts, pointelle keeps a knit's stretch and does not fray. It is most often fine cotton, modal or a cotton blend, in light weights the pattern can breathe through.
What pointelle feels like
Featherlight, soft and slightly open — you feel air moving through it. It stretches like the fine jersey it is built on and drapes close to the body. The openwork makes it semi-sheer by nature: layering is part of its styling language.
What to sew with pointelle
- Baby clothes and heirloom sets — the classic
- Camisoles, tanks and layering tees
- Cardigans and lightweight lounge sets
- Sleepwear that needs to breathe
Handle it as a delicate knit: fine ballpoint needle (70/10), light presser-foot pressure, stretch stitch, and let the feed dogs do all the moving — pulling distorts the eyelet columns. Bands and bindings in matching plain rib or jersey finish edges cleanly.

Common questions
Is pointelle see-through?
Semi — the eyelets admit light, and light colors over skin will show it. Layer it, line it, or lean into it as a deliberate look.
Is pointelle warm?
It is a warm-weather and layering knit: the holes that make it pretty also ventilate. Under a cardigan it adds softness, not insulation.
Is pointelle durable for baby clothes?
Yes — the eyelets are knitted loops, not weaknesses, and quality cotton pointelle survives normal gentle laundering for years. Wash cool in a mesh bag and skip harsh dryer heat.
