Waffle Knit, Explained
Waffle knit — thermal knit — is fabric textured into a three-dimensional honeycomb grid, and the grid is the function: every little pocket traps a bubble of warmed air against the body. It is the physics behind the classic thermal undershirt, and the texture behind half the cozy robes and henleys sold every winter.
How waffle works
The knit alternates raised and recessed cells, giving the cloth loft without weight. Air held in the cells insulates; the same structure wicks moisture along its channels, which is why waffle towels and robes dry skin — and themselves — faster than flat terry. More depth in the grid means more warmth and more texture.
What waffle feels like
Soft, squishy and dimensional, with a gentle stretch from both the knit and the grid itself (the cells open like an accordion). Cotton waffle is the breathable classic; poly blends add durability; brushed versions push the coziness further.

Sew with a ballpoint needle and stretch stitch, and stabilize shoulder seams — the accordion structure grows under load. Bands in rib or plain jersey finish necklines better than the waffle itself, which is bulky at bindings.
The shrink warning
Cotton waffle is the most shrink-prone common knit: the grid relaxes AND the cotton shrinks, easily 5–8% on a hot first wash. Pre-wash and dry the yardage exactly as the garment will be treated — twice for towels and robes — before cutting anything.

Common questions
Is waffle knit warm?
Genuinely — the honeycomb traps air the way loft does in a jacket, giving real warmth for very little weight. Under a shirt or over a tee it earns the name thermal.
Does waffle knit shrink?
More than most knits: expect 5–8% in hot washing if unwashed cotton. Pre-wash the yardage hot, dry it hot, and the finished garment stays true.
Is waffle fabric good for towels?
Excellent — the channels wick and air-dry fast, and the cloth packs light. Waffle towels dry you as well as terry at half the bulk, which is why spas favor them.
